As the school year comes to an end and the summer holidays begin, many families look forward to slower mornings, outdoor adventures, and well-deserved relaxation. While a break from school is important, it's also the time of year when many children experience what's known as the summer learning slide.
The good news? Preventing summer learning loss doesn't mean recreating school at home. In fact, the most effective way to keep young children learning is through short, playful activities that fit naturally into everyday family life.
If your child is aged 4–6, whether they're in Reception, Year 1, or preparing to start school in September, these simple ideas will help keep their reading and phonics skills growing all summer long.
What Is the Summer Learning Slide?
The summer learning slide (also known as summer learning loss) describes the decline in academic skills that can happen during the long summer break when children have fewer opportunities to practise reading and phonics.
Research has shown that regular reading and language-rich experiences over the holidays can help children maintain the progress they've worked so hard to achieve during the school year.
This is particularly important for:
Children in Reception developing early phonics knowledge.
Year 1 children preparing for the Phonics Screening Check or building reading fluency.
Preschool children starting school in September who will benefit from gentle exposure to letters, sounds, books and vocabulary.
The key is consistency—not lengthy lessons. Just a few minutes each day can make a real difference.
5 Easy Ways to Prevent the Summer Learning Slide

1. Make Phonics Part of Play
Children learn best through play, especially in the early years.
Instead of worksheets, try fun phonics games such as:
Sound scavenger hunts around the house or garden
Matching letter sounds
Word bingo
"I Spy" using initial sounds
Building simple CVC words with magnetic letters
These quick activities strengthen phonics skills without feeling like school.
Top tip: I regularly share simple phonics games and early reading ideas over on Instagram, so you can find plenty of inspiration whenever you need it.

2. Read Together Every Day
One of the best ways to support your child's reading is by making reading together part of your daily routine.
Even 5–10 minutes a day can:
Build reading confidence
Develop vocabulary
Improve comprehension
Encourage a lifelong love of books
Choose stories your child genuinely enjoys. Picture books, early readers, non-fiction books about their favourite animals, comics and bedtime stories all count.
The goal isn't perfection—it's making reading something they look forward to.

3. Find Reading Opportunities Everywhere
Reading doesn't only happen with books.
Help your child see that reading is useful in everyday life by encouraging them to read:
Shopping lists
Road signs
Menus
Recipes
Maps
Food packaging
Labels while shopping
These real-world reading opportunities build confidence and show children that reading has a purpose beyond school.

4. Take Phonics on the Go
Heading to the park, beach or on holiday?
Pack a few phonics flashcards or small word cards in your bag.
They're perfect for quick five-minute games while waiting for lunch, travelling or enjoying a picnic.
If your child is finding a particular sound tricky, focus on just that one sound through fun games rather than trying to cover everything at once.
Little and often is far more effective than long practice sessions.
5. Keep Learning Fun and Pressure-Free
Summer holidays should be full of happy memories—not battles over learning.
Celebrate effort, praise progress and keep activities light-hearted.
When children enjoy reading and phonics, they're far more likely to continue practising independently.
Remember, confidence grows when learning feels fun.
